HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS FLAG OFF CEREMONY IN IKLG: HON. OGUNLEYE APPLAUDS GOVERNOR OF OGUN STATE.
In a bid to curb the infection of Human Papillomavirus ( HPV), the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), as introduce the HPV vaccine into the routine immunization schedule and the implementation campaign flag off ceremony was held on Tuesday 24th October, 2023 at Christ Apostolic Grammar School, Iperu Remo. Ogun State.
Hon. Olusegun in his welcome address commended our focused leader and Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, MFR, CON for his various people oriented programs and projects been done in different sectors, especially the health sector. He appreciated the Commissioner for Health, Dr Tomi Coker for her contribution so far in the state.
The Council boss stated that Human Papillomavirus (HPV) disease is the most common viral infection of the reproductive tract and it causes more than Ninety Five Percent of cases of cervical cancer, which is the second most common cancer affecting women in Nigeria, so HPV vaccination at a tender age is important as it provides the best protection.He implored all parents, guardians and community leaders in Ikenne Local Government to give full support for their girl child between ages 9-14 years to be vaccinated.
Dr. Tomi Coker, the Honourable Commissioner for Health, in her address stated, that Ogun State been part of the first sixteen (16 ) states to introduce and implement HPV vaccine into the routine immunization schedule is a big plus because the importance of this campaign is to prevent and reduce the female death rate in our society. She also said, this disease can be transmitted through sexual intercourse.
Furthermore, she urged parents, guardians and caregivers to allow their girl child to be vaccinated during this mass campaign as the vaccine will be available for ages 9- 14 years.
Dr. Elijah A. Ogunsola, the Executive Secretary Primary Health Care Board encouraged all Parents to release their female children to be vaccinated and to dispel the rumor about the vaccine. He stressed further that this is the right time to stop Human Papillomavirus among girls and they should be vaccinated to protect them against the Cervical cancer and HPV vaccine is free, safe and effective.
Dr. I.O Florence Dedeke President of Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN) implored Traditional Leaders, Church Leaders and Imams to publicise the positive effect of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccine in their various communities.
Other dignitaries who were also at the flag off ceremony were, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health, Dr. K. M. Oladeinde, Vice Chairman Ikenne Local Government. Hon. Abolanle Fakoya, Supervisor for Health. Mr Ademola Awosipe, Director of Medical and Health Department IKLG, Dr. Mrs Esther Ogunsilu, Mr. Ogunle, IKLG Health Educator , The Chief Imam of Ikenne, Chief Imam Kehinde Hussein Lawal and many others.
