Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, Ogun State, has emerged winner of the Hon. Justice Innocent Umezulike National Law Debate Competition 2023. The competition which had four stages keenly contested by undergraduate law students from over 20 law faculties across the four regions Nigeria, saw winners receive a combined N350,000 cash prize fund, award plaques, certificate of excellence and law books gifts. Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun state, has appointed himself and his deputy, Kola Olawusi as commissioners for Works, Sport and Special Needs. This development comes as the governor swore in 25 newly appointed commissioners he assigned various portfolios on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Adeleke also swore in a lawyer, Sola Akintola, as the Commissioner for Health. The House of Assembly had confirmed the 25 commissioner-nominees after screening and Speaker Adewale Egbedun had announced the confirmation of the appointments.  Speaking during the inauguration at his office in Osogbo, Governor Adeleke said he would not condone what he called a solo show by any of the appointees. Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the national Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has resigned from office, according to multiple reports Sunday night. Adamu, former governor of Nasarawa state, was said to have resigned to save himself from being removed from office, the Western Post, close to the APC leadership reported. According to the paper, Adamu was forced to bow out over many issues which included his non-support for President Bola Tinubu during the campaign. For the past two weeks, elements within the party have been calling for his resignation threatening to remove him at the next National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting this week if he failed to resign. The party’s NEC meeting was initially billed to hold July 10 and 11 but was postponed till Tuesday and Wednesday this week due to the president’s international engagements. Fuel subsidy removal: Gov Uzodinma increases minimum wage to N40,000

Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo state has increased the minimum wage of workers in the state to N40,000. The governor made this known while addressing members of the state executive council on Saturday, July 15. He said the current economic situation caused by the removal of fuel subsidy is biting hard on the people and that the increment in salaries is to help cushion the hardship civil servants in the state are facing due to the fuel subsidy removal. In a statement by his chief Press Secretary, Oguwike Nwachukwu, Governor Uzodinma said his administration will give out soft loans, grants, provide seedlings and farm tools to qualified farmers in the state. “There shall be an immediate upward review of the salaries and wages of workers in the state. The minimum wage is hereby raised to forty thousand naira (N40,000) with discretionary consequential adjustments. The gesture followed the recent JAMB declaration of Umeh from Anambra State as the highest scorer with a cumulative mark of 360 in the examination. Soludo's chief Press secretary, Mr Christian Aburime, said the Governor has congratulated her for making the state proud with her exceptional performance. ‘Gang of Lagos’: Oba issues 14-day ultimatum to producers over Eyo masquerade

Oba Rilwan Akiolu of Lagos has given Amazon a 14-day ultimatum to remove the Eyo masquerade from the movie ‘Gangs of Lagos’. The movie, which was directed by Jade Osiberu, was released to the pubic via Amazon’s Prime Video on April 7 ‘Gangs of Lagos’ tells the story of a group of friends forced to navigate the hardship of growing up on the streets of Lagos. The Eyo masquerade, unique to the Lagos neighbourhood of Isale Eko, has drawn criticism from the public for being portrayed in the movie as being worn by a group of murderers. Irate indigenes have also questioned the film’s portrayal of Isale Eko as a den of criminals. As a result, the Isale Eko Descendants Union (IDU) filed a lawsuit against Amazon and the film’s producers. The union is demanding ₦10 billion in damages. Although a Federal High Court in Abuja granted him bail in the sum of N50 million, suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, will not be released, Daily Trust can report. Kyari, who is facing charges of failure to declare assets alongside his siblings, was granted bail on Thursday. The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) had filed a 24-count charges against DCP Kyari, his brothers Mohammed Baba and Ali before the court over his failure to declare properties allegedly linked to him in the asset form. The judge had earlier granted bail to the Kyari brothers who were accused of receiving funds from an international scam syndicate linked to Ramoni Abbas a.ka. Hushpuppi. In his ruling on Thursday, Justice James Omotosho granted Kyari bail in the sum of N50m and two sureties in like sum. Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, on Monday, disclosed that the E-mobility and Gas Mobility Programme of the state will take off in the first week of August. The governor also said that his administration would take advantage of the newly signed electricity bill that regulates the power sector by establishing a company that would generate and distribute power supply in the Gateway State.
